Former Sport Newcastle Rising Star Joy Eze has clinched a first senior international call up following a superb summer of sprinting.

After posting a new 100m PB of 11.14secs, the Gateshead Harrier is heading to Japan next month for athletics’ World Championships.

Eze, 21, has been named in a strong 4x100m squad after finishing fourth at the UK Championships.

And coach Mike Donnelly said: “Joy’s selection is fully deserved and as always we want to thank Sport Newcastle for helping to shape her early career.”

Eze was first recognised by the charity as a 13-year-old with huge potential and awarded a prestigious Rising Star award.

“We’ve been following Joy’s career for almost a decade and she continues to go from strength to strength,” said Sport Newcastle’s Mike Booth.

“All eyes will be on Tokyo next month and we can’t wait to witness the next stage of an exciting career.”

The 2025 World Championships take place from September 13-21.
