Sport Newcastle Platinum Award winners taking on the world in 2024
• 1 min read
Sport Newcastle Platinum Award winners Toby Aberdeen and Anya Hassan continue to fly the flag for North East sport following successful summers at home and abroad.
Toby tasted success in the Nordic Championships where he bagged a number of podium finishes along with a new personal best in 25m Pistol — securing a bronze medal in the individual event along with a British Finals record.
Joining up with Emily Faulkner for the mixed team event, the pair produced a gold medal performance, setting further British records in both qualification and the final.
And away from shooting, Toby secured the A Level grades required to study Sport and Exercise Science at Newcastle University.
Selection for the Junior World Championships in Peru clashed with Toby’s first two weeks of university and he chose to prioritise settling into student life before refocusing on sport.
Meanwhile, Anya is using her Platinum Award grant to help fund extensive travels around the world.
A successful trip to Lithuania in May, where she won silver at a European Cup event, was followed by training camps in the Midlands and Valencia.
Anya jetted off to Tallin, Estonia, to represent GB juniors at the European Judo Championships.
Selection for the Under 23 Olympic Potential training camp will see Anya in Japan for two weeks at the end of October.
